USC Chairperson Yael Toribio broke down in tears as he announced his resignation from the council amid the controversy concerning his fraternity, the Upsilon Sigma Phi.
In an oral statement, Toribio said that his interest will always be in service and his constituents and that a change of leadership is pertinent in resolving the issue.
After Toribio announced his resignation, University Councilor and Safety and Security Committee Head Rein Gallardo took the floor and tendered his resignation. In his speech, Gallardo said he was resigning to maintain the integrity of the council. He is a member of the Alpha Phi Beta Fraternity, which figured in a brawl with Upsilon Sigma Phi last week.
Toribio’s resignation is immediately effective, while Gallardo will step down in December to wrap up his obligations.
