“UP Fight!,” someone screamed in the middle of the Sunken Garden and multiple voices would answer likewise. This exemplifies the joy and relief the University of the Philippines (UP) Community felt after getting into the Finals series of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Men’s Basketball. Devoted fans and students alike showed immense support for the team that pushed their way through to the top. Mall of Asia Arena or Smart Araneta Coliseum, the venue did not matter as a sea of Maroon was always present and ready to join the battle using their deafening voices.

Maroons slay Falcons, 89-87, clinch Finals spot

Mythical Five member Juan Gomez De Liaño notched a career-high 30 points to spark UP’s offense in the first half. Paul Desiderio contributed on both ends with 16 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 steals, and 1 block while MVP Bright Akhuetie provided a steady presence with 13 points and 17 rebounds to help UP overcome the twice-to-beat disadvantage.

Maroons tame Tigers, 83-69

UP’s big three combined for 55 points with center Bright Akhuetie dominating the import-less Tigers with 25 points and 18 rebounds, team Captain Paul Desiderio torching them with 19 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists, and guard Juan Gomez De Liano dazzling with an all-around performance of 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Palaris fire injures one, razes six houses

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Quezon City Fire District received a call from a resident at 12:15 AM about a fire in the house of a certain Estrella Barona (other reports say Estrella Rodriguez). First responders were on the scene at 12:27 AM, but a second alarm was raised by 12:28 AM.

Students demand recruitment ban repeal

Article IV, Section 1.3.1.d of the CSC penalizes erring members of organizations who accept students who have not completed one semester with suspension from one semester to one academic year, and even possibly with expulsion. Meanwhile, the student who has not completed the one-semester residency but was accepted to the organization will be brought for counseling.

For many young people, getting into UP is a dream come true. Aside from the chance of getting a UP education, there is always excitement about turning over a new leaf, brandishing newfound freedom as one takes a step towards college life far away from the usual humdrum of their provincial hometowns. On 25 February 2013, former President Benigno S. Aquino III signed Republic Act No. 10368 or the Human Rights Victims Reparation and Recognition Act of 2013, mandating monetary reparation for human rights victims during Martial Law under the Marcos regime. It created the Human Rights Victims’ Claims Board (HRVCB) where victims’ claims for reparations are assessed or adjudicated. The P10-billion Swiss bank deposits recovered from the Marcoses served as the fund source of the reparations.

Tamaraws trounce Fighting Maroons, 73-89

The Fighting Maroons dropped to 1-2 this early season as they fell to the FEU Tamaraws 73-89 for their second straight loss. Juan Gomez De Liaño was limited to just 13 points (just about half of his season average of 22.5 points per game) while Orizu, Tolentino, and Comboy had 15, 13, and 12 respectively to lead a balanced attack by the Morayta-based cagers.

Jovito Palparan, et. al. found guilty

The Regional Trial Court (RTC) of Malolos, Bulacan handed the guilty verdict on 17 September 2018 against Palparan, Lt. Col. Felipe Anotado Jr. and Staff Sgt. Edgardo Osorio. Another accused, M/Sgt. Rizal Hilario, remains at large.
